This project was a blast. Jose Mena and Tuti Fernandez helped me orchestrate the whole thing in Spain and we got some amazing musicians to pitch in. In Madrid we got La Tremendita’s voice, which made the Tango what it is and set the tone for the Alegria. Then in Huelva Antonio Coronel did most of the percussion, which was recorded by Maxi Ramirez at Mena’s studio in Mazagón. From there we got Manolo Nieto, who is some kind of freak virtuoso-genius, and one of the nicest guys in the world, to do the bass, which really makes some of the songs. I wanted Albert Anguela to do the bass for the Rumba because we had played that tune a lot back in Boston when we were all at Berklee. Back in L.A. we added some stuff and my good friend Patric Oliver (of POPercussion) did some more pecussion for the Buleria and the Solea Por Buleria (check out the brushes at the end of the Buleria) and Fernando El Roto sang that amazing Solea Por Buleria that he wrote on the death of his mother. I learned so much doing this project and really found out what good friends I have in Spain, Boston and L.A. I hope you enjoy it.
